Hi there travelers,
Christmas gave me a visit a few days ago and it was lovely. We chatted, we celebrated and we ate tons of good food. Enough with this nonsense, let me tell what I actually did this season of greetings. Since it was short notice, my family and I decided to go to Munich this Christmas. Its proximity to home was a major factor. At the beginning, I was a bit like "How should I spend Christmas in Munich?" However, after experiencing it, I only have good things to say about it. What do you usually do around this time of the year if you go out in town? Well, I suppose many of you visit the Christmas markets. If you are a fan of that, then Munich is your ideal Christmas destination.
The Christmas Market in Munich is huge and amazing. Called the Christkindlmarkt, it is located in Marienplatz right in the center of town. While beautiful Christmas tress are placed at every corner, many stands offer Bavarian wood carvings, Christmas decorations, drinks such as hot apple cider and mulled red wine along with the emblematic dishes that are Wurst and käse spätzle. This Christmas market brings you that holiday spirit you've been waiting for the whole year. Carols are being played numerous times throughout the day and maybe you could even catch Santa walking around as well.
I bet that the majority of families prefer to spend Christmas at home. However I can promise you that Munich made me feel just like home. I owe that to the kindness of the local people selling items at the various stands. They explained the process they went through to obtain their beautiful carvings and they wished me all the best. I owe that also to the waiters from different restaurants, who after we got to know and were kind enough to give us homemade Christmas cookies. These random acts of kindness made me feel safe and actually very happy to spend Christmas in Munich. Honestly, it felt just like home. The value of being kind and celebrating Christmas or other holidays with everyone is found all over the world. Finding this similarity between Munich and my home country made me feel extremely welcome.
No one should be scared of celebrating Christmas or any other holiday abroad. You will find kind people ready to celebrate with you anywhere in this world. If I found this kind of people in Munich, what makes you think you won't find them anywhere else?
P.S. Munich is so obsessed with Christmas Markets they even have one at the airport! Instead of shopping in Duty Free, you will be Christmas shopping for the ones back home.
